Template Synthesis of Poly(2, 5-benzimidazole) in the Presence of Carbon Nanotubes |

Coincidently, the inner diameter of cis-poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) and the outer diameter of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are very close each other. Thus, in-situ template polymerizations of AB monomer 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid hydrochloride were carried out in a viscous polyphosphoric acid (PPA) medium. The morphological study of resultant SWNT/ABPBI nanocomposites was conducted by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that some portions are appeared that ABPBI was grown on the surface of SWNT template. In addition, persisting impurities in as-received SWNTs were also removed at the same time. For comparison, the AB monomer was also polymerized in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The homogeneous dispersion of the nanocomposites was achieved in methanesulfonic acid (MSA). The optical, mechanical and electrical properties of nanocomposites will be discussed. |
