Electrospun nanofiber mat-reinforced, permselective polyvinyl alcohol composite separator membranes: A membrane-driven step closer toward rechargeable zinc-air batteries |

Despite the commercial success of primary Zn-air batteries, rechargeable Zn-air batteries are still far behind practically meaningful performance levels. Among numerous challenges facing rechargeable Zn-air batteries, separator membranes have not been widely investigated compared to other battery components. In particular, crossover of soluble zincate ions through separator membranes. Here, we demonstrate a new class of electrospun nanofiber mat-reinforced permselective composite membrane (referred to as ERC membrane) and explore its application to rechargeable Zn-air cells in terms of transport phenomena of hydroxyl and zincate ions. The ERC membrane is fabricated by impregnating PVA into electrospun PEI nanofiber mat. The PEI nanofiber mat acts. The PVA matrix offers ion size (OH- vs. Zn(OH)42-)-dependent conductive pathways between the electrodes. This architecture/material uniqueness of the ERC membrane significantly suppresses permeation of bulky Zn(OH)42- ions. |
