제목 | Fabrication of Ceramic Micro-cell UO2 Nuclear Fuel Pellet |
초록 | We has designed a Ceramic micro-cell UO2 pellet to enhance the retention ability of highly radioactive and corrosive fission products, especially volatile Cs and I that are very hazardous in terms of the public health. The key idea of Ceramic micro-cell UO2 pellet is to immobilize Cs and I by providing multiple chemical traps inside the pellet and/or reducing their diffusivities. This study shows the ceramic micro-cell UO2 pellet preliminary feasibility for fuel pellet fabrication. UO2 pellets in which the ceramic micro-cell structure was successfully implemented could be fabricated by an adopting conventional liquid phase sintering technique. A powder mixture of UO2 and additives was pressed into green pellets, which were then sintered at an elevated temperature at which the additives for the wall materials formed a liquid phase, penetrating through the grain boundaries and enveloped UO2 grains to make the proposed ceramic micro-cell. It was suggested that SiO2 can chemically trap the volatile fission products of Cs and make relatively stable compounds. We therefore selected several SiO2-based mixed oxides as additive candidates for ceramic cell wall materials. Based on the thermodynamic calculation, we selected several potential elements and their combinations which can form a liquid phase during the sintering of UO2 pellets and spontaneously interact with Cs and/or I during the irradiation. By adding small amounts of cell wall candidate materials in UO2, we can obtain several ceramic micro-cell pellets having high density. |
