Magnetite (α-Fe3O4) core / polymer shell nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a nanoparticle templating method. The resol-type, phenolic resin precursor was prepared by the reaction between phenol and formaldehyde, and then mixed with magnetite nanoparticles in ethanol, resulting in the formation of the complex magnetite core/polymer shell nanoparticles. These core-shell nanoparticles were slowly heated and annealed at high temperature to convert the polymer phase into the magnetite core/carbon shell nanoparticles. Hollow carbon nanoparticles were obtained by chemical etching the magnetite core in acidic solution.
