Hydrogels usually composed of three-dimensional polymer networks structure and large amount of water inside the network structure. In addition to their variety of application such as drug delivery system and microfluid, they are quite attractive in tissue engineering. Unfortunately, most hydrogels suffer from lack of mechanical strength. Overcoming this problem, double network (DN) hydrogels have drawn much attention as an innovative material with both high water content(ca. 90%) and high mechanical strength. DN gels are characterized by a special network structure consisting two types of polymer components with opposite physical natures. The excellent mechanical performances are comparable to soft load-bearing bio-tissues. In the study, we introduce the results to measure hardness, strength, and the surgical attachment strength(suture tests) of DN gels synthesized under various feed compositions. The applicability of DN gel as soft biomaterials is also discussed. |
