This study has tried to develop a chitin-based biosorbent that can effectively remove dyestuffs in aqueous media. After combined glutaraldehyde with hydroxyl and amine groups on chitin, polyethylenimine-crosslinked chitin (PEI-chitin) was prepared by crosslinking PEI. The results of FE-SEM, FTIR and simple adsorption experiment showed that PEI was successfully crosslinked on the surface of chitin. In addition, its adsorption performance for Reactive Orange 16 was evaluated by pH effect, isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic, desorption and reuse experiments. As a result, the maximum adsorption capacity was 266 mg/g at pH 2 and the adsorption equilibrium reached within 30 min at 100 mg/L. A NaOH solution was used as eluent and showed good desorption rate, and the cycle of adsorption and desorption was repeatedly possible. Therefore, PEI-chitin can be considered as a biosorbent with great potential for removal of reactive dyes. |
