A photo-responsive chiral molecule containing azobenzene and naphthalene moieties (abbreviated as NCAzo) was newly designed and synthesized. The azobenzene groups in the NCAzo molecules respond to the light, while the (R)-configuration naphthyl groups give a chirality to the molecules. The thermal phase transition behavior of NCAzo molecules was studied by DSC and POM. From the results of WAXD experiments combined with thermal and morphological studies, it was showed that NCAzo formed a tilted highyl ordered smectic crystal phase. Chiral nematic (N*) phase was formed by doping the NCAzo molecules in nematic (N) liquid crystals (LC) and controlling the temperature, light and electric field, the helical pitch length of N* LC doping with NCAzo was tunable and it can realize the full reflection colors.
