Layered graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been receiving significant attention in membrane science due to their unique stacking structure, 2 dimensional nanochannel and ultrathin thickness. Although various kinds of GO based membranes have been prepared and their separation performances have been evaluated for water purification applications, the fundamental water and solute transport properties of GO layers are indistinct. Here we revealed the sorption, diffusion and permeation of water and various salt ions in GO layers and the effect of chemical and physical properties of GO on the mass transport properties. Since hydrophilic GO layers are formed by the physical interaction or hydrogen bondings between GO sheets, the layered structures of GO layers can be swelled by vapor or liquid water resulting in water and ion transport through nanochannels in GO membrane. The permeability and selectivity of GO membranes were easily controlled by adjusting the interlayer spacing of GO layer with physical and chemical modification methods. |
