Graphene oxide (GO), synthesized by strong oxidation of graphite, has gained much interest because of its potential applications in the field of materials science and engineering. However, its chemical composition and structure is varied with the synthesis method and the source of graphite. Also, the size and shape of GO is quite different from each other, leading to heterogeneous nature. Accordingly, the chemistry or reactivity of GO is not clearly understood yet. It is common that GO has mainly three oxygen-functional groups such as epoxy, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on basal planes or at edges, most of all, only C/O ratio is widely used for the characterization of GO. In this study we considered a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) as a model compound, and performed the same oxidation method of graphite to investigate the final chemical structure or composition of such PAH. Finally, the structural analysis and its characterization results were compared with graphene oxide. |
