Low quality oils containing impurities such as metal, sulfur and acid have lower economical value because it increases operation cost in refinery process. Upgrading low quality oil removing these impurities is paid attention from industries because of its profitability. Most profitable process in upgrading process is acid removal and many researches have been carried out. However, commercialized process which has economic efficiency has not been developed. In this study, acid extraction method using 1,6-hexanediol and ammonium hydroxide solution is suggested for removing acid from crude oil. Ammonium hydroxide reacted with naphthenic acid in crude oil and its product, ammonium naphthenate, is soluble in water. 1,6-hexanediol help extracting naphthenic acid by increasing solubility of naphthenate salt in water and it attract naphthenate salt from oil phase to aqueous phase. This method can reduce acidity from crude oil from TAN 5 to TAN 1 or lower in relatively mild operating condition and it can also get economical advantage by solvent recycle. |
