Polyaniline (PANI) fiber is one of the most potential candidates for electrorheological (ER) materials because of its various advantages such as easy synthesis, high stability, controlled conductivity and good ER response. In this study, we synthesized PANI fibers via an interfacial polymerization route, in which in other to improve ER performance, indole-2-carboxylic acid was used as a dopant instead of common acids, such as hydrochloric, sulfuric, or nitric acid, during process of synthesis. The synthesized PANI fibers were dispersed in silicone oil with 15vol% and their rheological properties as an ER fluid were examined using a rheometer under various electric field strengths. Also, we analyzed the dielectric properties by LCR meter. The result showed that indole-2-carboxylic acid which has a high polarizability enhanced ER effect, demonstrating that the polarizability is an important consideration in the ER behavior. |
