Poly(ethylene-co-2-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate) dodecyl chloride quaternary salt (PE-co-DMAEA) DCQS was synthesized from poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEAA) and dodecyl dimethyl hydroxyethyl ammonium chloride (DDHAC) via esterification. To our knowledge, this is the first case to synthesize the polymers using the quarternary ammonium chloride with 12 carbon atoms within the hydrophobic chain bonded to PEAA polymers. By using these materials, we examined several antibacterial tests to consider its activity. It was demonstrated that polymers interact with antibacterial activity according to synthesis temperature. It was shown that gram-positive bacteria Staphyloccus aureus, as well as the gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, can be affected in antibacterial activity when peaked at 135 °C then decreased at 155 °C. For S. aureus, a gram-positive bacteria, it showed the best yielding efficiency with elimination rate of 88.2 % on antimicrobial activity at 135 °C while for E. coli, a gram-negative bacteria, the highest efficiency of 99.0 % was obtained at 135 °C. |
