Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) is comprised of ion exchange membrane and two metal electrodes. IPMC has relatively light weight, small size, and it can be easily deformed because of its flexibility. Due to this structure, IPMC can be utilized as bending actuator, and bending sensor also. When mechanical deformation occurs, hydrated cations are concentrated in the side of contracted metal electrode, so hydrated cations moves into the side of stretched metal electrode owing to concentration imbalance. The migration of the inner cations makes electric current signal temporarily. In this research, capability of IPMC sensor was confirmed, and sensor properties of IPMC were discussed. To optimize the ability of IPMC sensor, sensing tests with several variables such as bending speed, bending angle, and thickness of IPMC were performed. |
