Edge seals for hydrocarbon membrane based PEMFCs |

A polymer edge seal and binder is used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to increase the wet/dry cyclic durability of hydrocarbon membrane based membrane electrode assembies (MEA). The durability test cycles between fully humidified and non-humidified fuel supply at fixed time intervals under an actual fuel cell operation environment at 70℃. To evaluate the electrochemical effect of using the edge seal, various measurements such as IV, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry are performed. To evaluate the enhancement in mechanical durability of the MEA due to the use of the edge seal, fuel crossover is measured at fixed intervals. MEAs with the edge seal showed markedly lower crossover values at the end of the durability test. |
