Effect of Boron on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti-6Al-4Fe Alloy |

Trace amounts of boron addition to the titanium alloy have been found to have a beneficial effect on the microstructure and the properties. Boron additions result in a refinement of the microstructure in as cast titanium alloys or thermomechanical processing. TiB intermetallics are found distributed in the interdendritic regions. In situ synthesized TiB has decreased primary β grain size and colony size via solution treatment at the above β transus temperature and aging treatment. mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile test and oxidation test. The boron containing titanium alloys exhibited superior strength by 10~20% than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy at room temperature. However, the strength of the boron containing alloys at high temperature shows lower than that of the Ti-6Al-4V. The oxidation resistance of the boron containing alloy is superior to that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The 0.05 wt.% B containing titanium alloy which has low voume fraction of TiB also exhibited good superplastic behavior at 973K. The tensile elongation over than 1200% can be obtained. |
