Composite nanoparticles containing magnetite (Fe3O4) core and mesoporous silica (mSiO2) shell were synthesized. A negatively-charged silica precursor was deposited on the surface of positively-charged Fe3O4 nanoparticles as core materials to form the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a thin silica layer to protect the Fe3O4 core under acidic circumstances. Then, the mesoporous silica shell was formed from simultaneous sol−gel polymerization by using CTAB as a structure-directing agent and TEOS, followed by the calcination of CTAB at high temperature. The inner magnetic core offered the whole nanoparticle with magnetic properties, while the outer mesoporous silica shell provided large surface area and pore volume. |
