제목 Control of Liquid Crystal Alignment on Polystyrene Nanorod Arrays
초록 We investigated the alignment behavior of liquid crystal molecules (LCs) on nanopatterned substrate can be controlled by the small variation of size of the nanostructure. The diameter-controlled and height-controlled substrate was obtained from anodized aluminum oxide template. Upon the introduction of 1D nanostructures to the surface, the LC alignment was strongly influenced by the size of surface pattern. Homeotropic alignment is found on larger or longer rod arrays (Diameter > 55 nm or Length > 113 nm), while random alignment of liquid crystals is observed on smaller or shorter rod arrays. Since the size of the nanoscopic pattern is comparable to the scale of characteristic packing of the LC molecules, the transition of LC alignment is thought to be caused by the packing frustration on the LC molecules imposed by the nanoscopic confinement.
