Ligated Anionic Polymerization of Styrene-Methylmethacrylate Block Copolymer in the presence of Bulky Aluminum compound |

Styrene-methylmethacrylate block copolymer was synthesized using sequential anionic polymerization of MMA in toluene at -10℃ in the presence of excess amounts of various bis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxy) alkylaluminums over polystyryllithium. The polymerization proceeded in a living manner at higher temperaturecompared to conventional living anionic polymerization of MMA blow -65℃. The beneficial effect of bulky aluminum phenoxide was attributed to the coordination with enolate ion pairs providing stabilization to ligand-complexed ion pairs. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and proton NMR. |
