Fatty acid profiles of microalgal oils determine the biodiesel properties, since the molecular characteristics of fatty acid methyl ester(FAME), such as carbon chain length and degree of unsaturation, directly affect the viscosity, specific gravity, ignition quality, oxidative stability, and cold flow property. The fatty acid profile is also dependent on the microalgal species and its growing conditions, including different nutritional and physicochemical factors. This study investigated the effect of culture conditions on the FAME compositions of the marine green alga Tetraselmis sp., and evaluated the resultant fuel properties by using predictive models based on FAME composition. The major fatty acids in Tetraselmis sp. were C16:0, C18:1, C18:2, and C18:3, regardless of the culture conditions, however, the degree of unsaturation was changed by different culture conditions, and influenced some parameters of biodiesel properties. |
