The chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of D-glucosamine which can be obtained from the chitin shells of shrimp and other crustaceans. It has active amino groups, exhibits higher reactivity and water solubility. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is attracting attentions of researchers due to the environmentally friendly systems using water instead of the organic solvent. Therefore, the WPUs have been used for wide range of commercial application in coatings and adhesives. In this paper, we have investigated self-healing waterborne polyurethane systems prepared from a prepolymer of poly(tetramethylene ether glycol), dimethylol propionic acid and isophorone diisocyanate with chain extension by the chitosan in water. The sizes of the latex particles, mechanical properties, and thermal properties have been characterized by dynamic light scattering, UTM and DSC. Self-healing properties and stress-relaxation properties were investigated employing the dynamic mechanical analysis. |
