Polymeric materials derived from renewable resources are attracting great attentions of scientists because of the limited petroleum resources. Eugenol is one of representative natural aromatic compounds available from biomass and has the potential for broad range of application for polymer systems. It is already widely used in perfumes, antioxidants, drugs and foods. In this study, polyurethanes derived from eugenol showing dynamic features were studied experimentally. The reversible properties resulted from the urethane units formed by the reaction between aromatic isocyanate and phenolic hydroxyl group of eugenol. It is postulated that eugenol based polyurethane exhibited self-healing properties due to the dynamic nature of the urethane units based on eugenol . |
