Recently, there is a growing demand for the self-healing polymers in order to improve the durability, crack healing and corrosion resistance of polymeric materials. Therefore, a variety of self-healing chemistries of polymeric materials are being developed and various self-healing processes are being proposed for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) which is being applied in many industry fields such as foams, coatings, adhesives and elastomers. In this paper, a vanillin derivative, azomethine diol, was introduced into the TPU and found the reversible nature of urethane groups formed by the reaction between phenolic hydroxyl group and aromatic isocyanate. As the urethane groups have dynamic nature above the Tg of poly(azomethine-co-urethane) (PAU), PAU become self-healable. Furthermore, viscosities of PAU in melts can be lowered by the decrease of molecular weights due to the reversible nature of the specific urethane groups and the processing of PAU becomes very attractive in the melts. |
