Hierarchical Gecko-like Adhesives |

We suggest a new method to fabricate a hierarchical nanofiber array by using porous alumina templates. The fabrication approach extends a powerful and well-established technique of creating porous alumina to create a polymer multilevel structure, mimicking the hierarchical structure of gecko foot hairs. Polymer nanofibers with various aspect ratios were investigated for their adhesion and friction properties using atomic force microscopy. The hierarchical gecko-like nanofiber array exhibited superior tribological properties, at both these scales when compared to those of other nanostructures. |
