We suggest a new method to fabricate hierarchical nanohairs by using porous alumina templates. To obtain nanohairs with multilevel structure, the process of fabrication extends a powerful and well-established technique of creating porous, mimicking the hierarchical structure of gecko foot hairs. Polymer nanohairs with various aspect ratios and hierarchy were investigated for their adhesion and friction properties using atomic force microscopy. The hierarchical gecko-like nanofiber array exhibited superior adhesion/friction properties, at both these scales when compared to those of other nanopatterns. |
