Novel sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether sulfone)s (PFES)s with a network structure were prepared by heat-induced crosslinking of the allyl-terminated telechelic sulfone polymers using a bisazide and their structure was analyzed by 1H-NMR. Having combined benefits of both the fluorenylbiphenyl unit and the minimized crosslinked network, the crosslinked polymer membranes offered excellent proton conductivity at high temperature with a good thermal/dimensional stability. In addition, selectivity (the ratio of proton conductivity to methanol permeability) of the crosslinked membrane was much greater than that of Nafion. The concept of incorporating sulfofluorenyl unit into our terminally-crosslinked network is a promising alternative to the perfluorinated ionomer membranes and we intend to apply this approach to other known sulfonated aromatic polymers. |
