As a key element in the RED process, the membrane influences the overall power output of the RED stack. Especially, the membrane resistance is one of important properties of the membrane. The membrane resistance plays a role of the dominant factor to generate energy when thin spacers are used. In this study, CEM and AEM consisting of a cross-linked polymers in a porous polyolefin substrate were simultaneously used for application in RED. The area resistances of the CEM and the AEM were determined at a standard condition, i.e., using 0.5M NaCl solution. We could obtain higher power densities by using the membranes of thickness of 25㎛ with a low area resistance (around 0.4Ω㎠) than those from the commercially available membranes. |
