In this study, cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) waste was converted into carbon materials for electrode material of supercapacitors. To prepare XLPE-waste-derived carbons (XC), sulfonation was preferentially conducted, and then following carbonization and activation processes were sequentially carried out. It was confirmed that XLPE can be converted into XCs with a large surface area and highly developed microstructure at the same time by the chemical activation process. Thus, the supercapacitors prepared with XCs exhibited considerably high capacitance and good rate capability comparable with YP50f, a representative commercial electrode material. Consequently, it is envisioned XLPE waste can be a starting material for commercially available electrode materials for supercapacitors. |
