Recovery of Li+ ions from sea water, where Li+ ions are present in a large quantity, has received great attention as need of Li+ ions increases for industrial uses. However, many other alkaline and alkaline earth metal ions such as Mg2+, Na+, K+, etc. are also present in large quantities along with Li+ ions, which makes isolation of Li+ ions from sea water difficult. In this research, polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) was encapsulated into ZIF-8 particles that are highly porous nano-sized. Such particles (ZIF-8-PSS) were combined with polymer solutions, and the resulting dispersions were cast on substrates to prepare free-standing composite membranes. The prepared ZIF-8-PSS and composite membranes were investigated employing XRD, FE-SEM, etc. The best composite membrane was selected to assemble a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell. The experimental results on the characterizations of the composite membranes and MCDI cell will be presented in detail. |
