A certain crown ether can bind an alkaline metal ions such as Li+, Na+ and K+, depending on its chemical structure. In this study, 12-crown-4 ether was covalently linked to a copolymer, and the resulting polymer was characterized with respect to chemical structure and thermal property. The polymer was cast to form free standing films, which were then characterized with respect to water uptake and tensile property. Finally, the polymer film was employed in assembling a membrane capacitive deionization cell where commercial ion-exchange membranes were placed in the front of both electrodes, and then the lithium ion adsorption behavior of the cell was investigated. The experimental results will be presented in details. |
