Synthesis and property of PEG coupled by biocide for aqueous metal working fluids |

Poly ethylene glycol (PEG) is used in aqueous lubricants because of its water soluble and the lubricant property. But the introduction of water into a metalworking formulation leads to corrosion, enhanced bacterial activity, and corruption. Biocides are ingredients of lubricants to control the microbial growth. The purpose of this study is to development of aqueous lubricant which has a sustained release of biocide. Poly(oxyethylene)-dicarboxylic acids (POE-DA) was synthesized by oxidation of PEG. Polyethylene glycol coupled with biocide (PEG-biocide) was synthesized from poly(oxyethylene)-dicarboxylic acids, biocide(o-phenylphenol). The synthesized PEG-biocide was identified by H1-NMR spectra. When release characteristic of PEG-biocide was compared with that of PEG and biocide mixture, PEG-biocide showed longer sustained release profile of biocide and longer antimicrobial effect on metal working fluids. |
