Carbon fibers (CF) are finding increased uses in a variety of applications because of their high tensile strength and modulus combined with light weight, high thermal stability, etc. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) has been considered as one of the most widely used precursors for manufacturing high performance CFs. However, the use of pristine PAN homopolymer is restricted due to its low spinnability and stabilization. In order to improve the processability and stabilization of the pristine PAN, in the present study, we have manufactured a series of PAN-based terpolymers with different concentration of vinyl acetate and itaconic acid by solution polymerization and water-based dispersion polymerization, and have investigated their molecular structures, solution viscosity, thermal properties as potential precursors for high performance CFs. |
