Nafion/Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone)/Nafion Tri-layered Composite Membrane for Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators |

Various ionomers to replace commercial Nafion employed in ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators have been reported. However, almost all the alternatives with higher ion-exchange capacity compared to Nafion have suffered from unacceptably low dimension stability of free-standing beam and consequently high electrical resistance of IPMC due to mechanical damages on surface electrode occurred during water-swelling. Herein, tri-layered composite membrane consisting thin outer layers of recast Nafion (20 micron) and a thick inner layer of SPEEK (800 micron) was prepared by chemical crosslinking between the sulfonic acid groups of different membranes. A series of SPEEK with degree of sulfonation ranging from 60 to 100 % was selected. The as-prepared actuators showed effectively enhanced performance compared to single-layer counterpart, which resulted from the enhanced conductivity and mechanical stability of IPMC.
