Thermo-sensitive Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels of the ABC-type Triblock Copolymers for Injectable Hydrogels |

Mixture of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes with stimuli-responsiveness has received much attention for its potential to form self-assembled micelles or hydrogel network with unique properties depending on concentration and stimulus. We report herein that two different stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte ABC-type triblock copolymers composed of charged block, thermally responsive block, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) block at different block lengths were prepared by reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and Michael-base addition reaction, and mixture of these oppositely charged triblock copolymers at high concentration formed polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogels via electrostatic interaction. These PEC hydrogels showed thermal responsiveness as well as physically stabilized PEG networks due to hydrogen bonding. Thus, the PEC hydrogels would have great potential for injectable hydrogel-based biomedical applications. |
