We report the preparation and characterization of nanohybrids comprised of PE and three different types of POSS, namely octamethyl-, octaisobutyl-, and octaphenyl-POSS. We focused on the effect of POSS on the physical properties of the PE resin. The decomposition temperature of nanohybrids was greatly enhanced by the incorporation of the inorganic POSS. The decomposition temperature of the PE/octaisobutyl-POSS nanohybrid was higher than that for PE/octamethyl- and PE/octaphenyl-POSS nanohybrids. It may be due to that the oxidation of the long alkyl-substituted POSS in air took place on the organic chains and led to a cage crosslinking, producing a ceramic silica-like phase. And, we observed that the highest mechanical properties were obtained with the PE/octaisobutyl-POSS nanohybrid, indicating that the interaction between PE and the longer alkyl substituted POSS was more favorable. The microstructure and the distribution of POSS in the nanohybrid were also analyzed by XRD and FE-TEM. |
