Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) reagents have unique hybrid chemical compositions containing nano-sized cage structures with dimensions comparable to those of most polymer segments and coils. This work reports an in-situ polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanohybrids with a novel nanofiller system composed of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) and POSS. The nanofiller was synthesized by reacting acid-treated MWNT and 1,2-propanediolisobutyl-POSS, based on the esterification method. The structure was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were used to investigate the degree of the dispersion of the nanofillers in the PMMA matrix, and to analyze the morphology of the PMMA nanohybrids. The thermal, mechanical and rheological properties of the in-situ polymerized PMMA nanohybrids were measured. |
