To control photoluminescence properties in both solution and solid phases, two types of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) luminogen amphiphiles were newly designed and synthesized by anionic exchange technique. Multicolor emission was successfully shown in response to thermal, mechanical, and chemical stimuli by engineering well-defined supramolecular structures. Phase transition from the metastable amorphous solid to the stable orthorhombic crystal of [DPIm][Br] enabled reversibly patternable light emission. The linearly polarized light emission is also apparent in the self-organization of [DP-Im][TFSI] into the smectic crystalline phase. Finally, by combining [DP-Im][Br] and [DP-Im][TFSI], we demonstrated the development of smart sensors for food or vaccine packaging that can detect thermal attack.
