Chemical Modification of Diamond Nanopowders with 4-(2,4,6-Trimethylphenoxy)benzamide in Polyphosphoric acid/Phosphorous Pentoxide |

Although expected various properties and applications of diamond nanopowders (DNPs) are thoroughly investigated, DNPs are worthwhile to investigate the properties stemming from the nano-scale spherical structure. Thus, we tried to chemically modify DNPs with 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzamide (2,4,6-TMPBA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA)/phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) to improve organo-solubility. On the basis of Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the results showed that DNPs were well functionalized with 2,4,6-TMPBA. It implys that the system PPA/P2O5 is strong enough to facilitate “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction onto the sp3C-H bonds of DNPs. The functionalized DNPs will be used as materials for precision polishing of laser elements, optics and electronics. |
