Various purification methods have been reported to eliminate metallic and carbonaceous impurities persisting in carbon nanomaterials. Most of them are strong acid treatments resulting in damages to the framework of carbon nanomaterials. Thus, we tried to chemically refine the diamond nanopowders (DNPs), which stay as aggregates and agglutinates, in a less-destructive mild PPA/P2O5 to remove impurities. We also carried out the chemical modification of pristine DNPs and purified DNPs (PDNP) with 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzamide (TMPBA) to afford TMPBA-g-DNP and TMPAB-g-PDNP. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the intensity of the characteristic diamond d-spacing (111) at 2.07 from PDNP was fairly increased compared to pristine DNP. The results suggested that the reaction condition is indeed viable for the one-pot purification and functionalization of DNPs. The resultant functionalized DNPs will be useful for nanoscale additives. |
