The supramolecular host-guest (H-G) chemistry has been widely introduced to the fields of biomedical such as drug delivery, bioadhesive and molecular sensing. In particular, the β-cyclodextrin and adamantane, which can mediate a specific molecular recognition via H-G interactions, are heavily investigated due to their inertness and compatibility in biological system. Despite the considerable interests, the molecular mechanisms of H-G interaction still remain ambiguous due to the complex nature interactions between biomolecules. Herein, we directly measured the interaction between β-cyclodextrin and adamantane in aqueous solution to elucidate its molecular mechanism using a surface forces apparatus (SFA). The adhesion forces showed a drastic increase as the concentration of guest molecules by reaching complete H-G complexes and gradually decreased above the excess amount of guest molecules. This study suggests crucial evidences for the further applications in supramolecular chemistry. |
