Pyrrolinium based ionic liquids for electrolytes in lithium ion batteries |

Ionic liquids (ILs) have driven research interest in a variety of applications including electrolytes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high decomposition temperature and non-volatile nature. Current LIBs using flammable electrolytes are experiencing difficulties with ignition or explosion of the device. Thus, we synthesized fire tolerable but also highly ion conductive ILs based on pyrrolinium cation for applying in LIBs as electrolytes. The characteristics of the ILs were analyzed via NMR, impedance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). Finally, we applied the ILs into half coin cells as electrolytes. In this work, we chose the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, LFP) with olivine structure as a cathode candidate because of their cost efficiency and broad electrochemical stability. The cells with synthesized ILs showed good enough cycle life even over 50 charge-discharge cycles. |
