Biodegradable plastics can be utilized as carbon and energy sources by diverse microorganisms in the environment and completely degraded. Understanding degradation mechanisms and process is important to accelerate the degradation of biodegradable plastics releasing into the environment, especially in soil. To accelerate the degradation of biodegradable plastics (BP), it is necessary to identify efficient BP-degrading microorganisms (BDMs) and to determine environmental factors for the degradation process. The BDMs were inoculated into artificial soils containing BP that can control pH, temperature, salinity, moisture contents, etc., and the degradation process of BP was analyzed. This study can provide information to predict the fate of wasted commercial BP in soils. |
