Tannic acid (TA) is a naturally derived polyphenolic compound and possesses diverse bonding abilities. TA is capable of complexing or cross-linking macromolecules through multiple interactions, including hydrogen and ionic bonding and hydrophobic interactions. It also can coordinate with metal ions to form TA-metal networks. Therefore, TA is an ideal gelation binder in hydrogel formation. Herein, we report a simple and rapid gelation of naturally occurring and inexpensive TA with high molecular weight poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl aspartamide) derivatives. The characterization of these supramolecular hydrogels and their adhesive properties will be presented. TA is already an FDA-approved compound, so studies of the TA-polymer conjugates will be very useful for the future development of new biocompatible hydrogel for various biomedical applications. |
