The synthesis and evaluation of PtRhSn/C electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction and the effect of structural modification |

A fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device that functions by harnessing the chemical energy released from chemical reactions occurring at the anode and cathode and converting it into electrical energy. One kind of fuel Cell, Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell has several benefits, such as stable fuel storage, high molecular energy density, low operation temperature and environmental friendliness. But there is problem that a large amount of noble metal catalyst is required to overcome extremely slow kinetics of ethanol electrooxidation and obstacles of C-C bond breaking. In this study, PtRhSn/C electrocatalysts were synthesized by conventional polyol method and were treated by thermal annealing at different gas atmospheres. These processes significantly affected the structure and oxidation state of noble metal-based electrocatalysts. The enhancements of these modifications were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and various electrochemical measurements. |
