Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 1,1’-binaphthyl (BN) derivatives, of which two naphthalene groups are twisted along (1)-(1’) bond, were synthesized. We prepared various types of BN SAMs on silica surfaces by changing substituents at 6,6’-positions of the BN derivatives. We also formed a mixed SAM comprised of the BNs and octadecyltrichlorisilane (OTS). The BN SAMs resemble Czech hedgehogs on which packing of foreign molecules is anticipated to be hindered. When pentacene was deposited by thermal deposition method on these BN SAMs, nucleation and growth of pentacene crystals depend on molecular structure of the SAM and the deposition condition of pentacene. |
