Structural organization of most well-known biocomposites, such as nacre of abalone shell, can be described as horizontal stacking plates parallel to each other. However, columnar motifs of biocomposites are barely spotlighted even though their appearance in nature is so abundant in endo- or exoskeletons of living organisms. In this study we fabricated artificial biocomposties with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires motivated from columnar biocomposites. ZnO nanowires were vertically grown onto substrate to represent stiff nano-columns, and polymers with similar viscoelastic properties to biopolymers were selected for matrix to incorporate with ZnO nanowires using layer-by-layer assembly (LBL). The unique columnar artificial composites show exceptional combination of stiffness-damping property approaching to the highest value superior to conventional materials. |
