Extend of photosynthetic effect of isolated chloroplasts by encapsulated in the pectin-based hydrogel |

Plant chloroplasts fix atmospheric carbon, an important event in the global carbon cycle. Various proteins located in the chloroplast membrane are activated by light energy to convert atmospheric CO2 into a chemical energy source. However, once isolated from plants, the chloroplast starts losing photosynthetic activity. Here, we present our efforts to extend the viability of isolated chloroplasts by the addition of antioxidants and encapsulation within pectin hydrogels. The viability of the isolated chloroplast was evaluated based on the Calvin cycle by photosynthesis. Also, oxygen production, electron transfer rate, ATP production, and glucose production were measured to confirm the complete activity at each stage. Antioxidants primarily extended the viability of the isolated chloroplasts, and the lifespan of the chloroplasts could be extended 2.8-fold through pectin hydrogel encapsulation. These results will find potential utility in designing environmentally sustainable materials. |
