Hyaluronic acid (HA), which has unique structure of repeating disaccharide units of D-glucuronic acid and Nacetyl-D-glucosamine, is a components of extracellular matrix (ECM). Because it plays a key role in cell adhesion, growth, and migration, HA is known to be a signaling molecule in cell motility, inflammation, wound healing, and cancer invasion/metasis. Especially, HA receptors such as CD44 and RHAMM in tumor cells is generally over-expressed in tumor cells and is also known to be positively correlated with cell migration and invasion. Therefore, HA can be used as a targeting molecule for anti-tumor drug delivery against CD44 receptor of tumor cells. |
