Hard-soft-hard methacrylate based triblock copolymer ionomers were synthesized by Ru-based living radical polymerization (ATRP). For this, dodecyl methacrylate (DMA) was first polymerized from a difunctional initiator with RuCl2(PPh3)3 catalyst and nBu3N additive in toluene at 80 oC. As the polymerization was over 90%, second monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) was in-situ added to give well-defined triblock copolymer of MMA/tBMA-b-DMA-b-MMA/tBMA (PDI < 1.2). Obtained triblock copolymers were then hydrolyzed to deprotect tert-butyl groups of the MMA/tBMA block segments by trifluoroacetic acid to give ionic MMA/methacrylic acid (MA) block segments in the triblock copolymers. These ionic triblock copolymers, poly(MMA/MA-b-DMA-b-MMA/MA) were then examine their elastomeric properties in conjunction with morphology studies. In addition, electro-mechanical properties were examined under external electric field. |
