Effects of conjugated bases as a TiO2-surface modifier on the open circuit voltage of solar cells |

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been most frequently used as an anodic material in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) due to its predominant chemical stability and moderate charge transport capability. However, the injected electrons into TiO2 layer can possibly go back to the sensitizer or the electrolyte due to an electron recombination phenomenon. This back electron transfer causes a diminution in conversion efficiency; hence many researchers have investigated modifications to the TiO2 layer. In this study, we report the preparation of surface-modified TiO2 electrodes using conjugate bases of weak acids and effects of the modification on the photovoltaic properties of DSSCs. The open circuit voltage of DSSCs with surface-modified TiO2 layers was improved with increasing basicity of the conjugated base. |
