EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) has been widely used in the electrical applications due to its electrical insulating properties and resistance to moisture, oxygen and weather. However, the EPDM shows inferior properties of exposure at the outdoors in a long period. Accordingly, the blends of EPDM and silicone rubber are known to improve the electrical and mechanical performances in the outdoors environment. In this study, we prepared two types of compatibilizers to enhance the blends with EPDM and silicone rubber. One is the blend of the modified EPDM with maleic anhydride and the substituted PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) with partially amino groups. The other is the modified EPDM with maleic anhydride and the grafted silicone rubber with acrylamide. We performed the FT-IR analysis to examine chemical characteristics of the compatibilizer and thermal aging of EPDM/silicone blend in order to understand its effect on electrical and physical properties.
